Most wearables utilize a very basic PPG sensor capable of capturing your heart rate during moderate activity. Their signal, however is completely binary – counting only that a beat occurred. Our system is different – instead of checking your pulse at all times, we check while you’re still, allowing us to capture high-fidelity, raw PPG waveforms.
Our clinical-grade PPG sensor allows us to gather extremely precise heartbeat data. But, to be able to successfully capture the high precision heartbeat data, it is very important that your hand is still.
If you make sure that your wristband is tight, most the biometric readings taken while you are sleeping will be successful. Sleeping time biometric recordings are more relevant with respect to its reflection on your overall health.
In healthy adults, typically a lower heart rate during sleep(also known as resting heart rate) is good, HR Variability (HRV) on the higher side, Respiration Rate on the lower size and oxygen saturation (PSO2) above 90% (closer to 100%).
It is possible to improve your biometric numbers by making simple lifestyle changes. E.g. by eating unprocessed food, by managing the stress, by getting adequate sleep, and by exercising.
Biostrap attempts to take biometric readings every 10 minutes, all day long. However, in effort to save power and optimize data collections, Biostrap does not sample while there is movement. Therefore, you may see fewer readings throughout the day.
Active Heart Rate
Because the current Biostrap version attempts to capture high definition heartbeat data, it is not possible to capture successful recording when the hand is moving.
Biostrap is working on the alternate algorithms which will allow it to capture active heart rate.
Special Consideration for Oxygen Saturation (SPO2) Recordings
Signals which are used to compute the Oxygen Saturation Percentage are generally very weak. These signals can very easily get distorted if you move your arm or if there is ambient light falling on the device. Ambient light plays major role in getting (or not getting) successful oxygen saturation reading.
One way to make sure that the ambient light is not interfering with the recording, please try to cover your wristband with your sleeve, a towel or some other piece of cloth when you are performing the on demand biometric recording.
